Leaving Doors Open

"In zazen leave your front door and your back door open. Let thoughts come and go. Just don't serve them tea."

From Crooked Cucumber, chapter 15.

The source for this is me, DC. I remember Suzuki saying it and it stuck with me. Can't find it anywhere else searching shunryusuzuki.com or my computer. I see it quoted quite a bit on the Internet. That was over forty years ago so it could be something I heard in a lecture or discussion or dokusan or something that someone else said they'd heard. Anyway, it sounds just like him.

Got an email today asking for the source of that quote from Dana Velden - that's her SFZC page. Not a lot of people with that name. Search turns up some interesting Zen and food-related links. - DC
