Indonesian Conservation Movement

STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE ACEH CITIZEN LAWSUIT MOVEMENT

Sign the petition if you agree. You can read about it if you follow the link. Trying to preserve the Leuser Ecosystem. Good luck to them. The general attitude here is to destroy their treasures for the sake of "development" which mainly means making some investors richer. Sort of like the rest of the world but more so.

Breaking Tennis News

The following email was sent to our fourth Ian who has gone back to Aussieland for at least a long time. Phil in the middle is a retired judge from upstate Michigan whose yearly three month stay with his wife is about over. Scott from London on the right lives here. Nyoman from here in Bali couldn't play today. Usually we have four of the five and rotate. We rotate with three as well. That's a poorly maintained but fine with us clay court a short walk from here. I don't know how to smile on purpose. - dc

The Internations Invitational Classic, an extremely competitive tennis showdown, took place again today in Bali. The guys were a man down, but they battled through. Phil the ambidextrous law breaker was reportedly using underhanded time-pressure tactics to secure a victory. However, it turned out that no one knew what the score was anyway. The players, pictured below, observed a moment of silence for their MIA comrade. [Sent to Ian by Scott]

From Tony Artino's SR lecture notes

Suffering comes from desires. Zazen leads to the strength to cut off the root of suffering. When we are free from our suffering we are called Buddhas. But our desires are limitlessly deep. Hence it is impossible totally to cut off our human suffering. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Excerpt from Tony Artino's notes of a Shunryu Suzuki lecture 66-11-09 as found on shunryusuzuki.comEdited by DC - Shunryu Suzuki lecture excerpts on cuke.com - from there links to much more. - Go to cuke.com What's New [now at blogger] to see more daily posts.

Proof Positive

That the human race isn't crazy and suicidal and trashing the planet.

Ted Marshall's Memorial

will be at Green Gulch on May 19th, at 2 p.m.

Ted will be honored on the altar he helped build, and that he was among the very first group of guest students at Green Gulch, a Tassajara resident from 1974-1978, a Green Gulch resident again in 1979-81, and a long time Muir Beach resident after that. He received jukai from Peter van der Sterre this January, with many long time Zen Center sangha attending.

Difficulties

Because of the language difficulty, I have to think and think and think [laughs] to express myself. This thinking helped me a lot. And I'm very much grateful for the difficulty. And I think it is same thing with you. You must have great difficulties in understanding my talk [laughs]. “What he say?” [Laughs, laughter.] At least I gave you chance to think [laughs, laughter]. And this thinking, I think, helped you a lot. I hope it was not waste of time. And it was not waste of time for me too. Anyway, we should be grateful for any problem we have every day. It is not repetition of same thing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 66-08-19-D as found on shunryusuzuki.comEdited by DC - Shunryu Suzuki lecture excerpts on cuke.com - from there links to much more. - Go to cuke.com What's New [now at blogger] to see more daily posts.

Changing

Everything is changing. That truth will solve various problems you have. That is, you know, eternal truth. And our practice is based on this truth, so our practice is always true. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 66-08-19-D as found on shunryusuzuki.comEdited by DC - Shunryu Suzuki lecture excerpts on cuke.com - from there links to much more. - Go to cuke.com What's New [now at blogger] to see more daily

Tampa Pipet

That means without a straw. That's how I order any drink that might come with a straw. If it's an upscale place I'll say without a plastic straw because some places are using paper or organic tube plant straws or glass. About four out of five times they forget and bring a plastic straw and I gently lecture them on how they don't decompose and often end up in streams and the ocean. There is a movement to get restaurants to stop using them. We're all still doomed but it seems like a good effort to make.
