Begins lecture with

This sesshin was wonderfully done. This is, I think, very unusual. By usual mind this kind of thing cannot be fulfilled. I think this is because of your bodhisattva mind which is to do things for others or for your future descendant rather than for yourself. What you have in your mind is what should be done for others or for your descendant. Although you are quite young, still you have this mind. .  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Descendants here means dharma descendeants]  Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-B found onshunryusuzuki.com. Ends lecture with admonition

As we are pretty big group now, [laughs] we must be very strict with ourselves. Okay? You are too many, so [laughs] instead of candy we have to give you some salt so that [laughs, laughter] we have not much difficulties. If we serving just salt not much people will come [laughs, laughter]. Now let's sit without candy [laughs, laughter]. Thank you very much.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. Zentatsu Richard Baker

Just posted all of the places in the SFZC Wind Bell about, by, with mentions of Richard Baker presented on five pages of scans from the Wind Bells linked to from the top of his cuke page. A slice of his story is presented there and intertwines with that of Shunryu Suzuki and many of us. Wonder where I'd be and what I'd be doing if I hadn't met them.

What

Under many scolding slaps you should study.” [Laughs.] What, you know, do they mean [laughs]?  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. Nanshu

A hero in the Meiji Period, Saigo Nanshu, said it is difficult to manage someone who does not want fame or profit. [Laughs.] He said the most trustworthy person is the person who has nothing to do with name or profit. That is very true. All right? Met the Ambassador today

The US Ambassador to Indonesia, Joseph R. Donovan Jr., came to Bali for the first time, at least as ambassador, and met with US expats this afternoon for a couple of hours. Career in State Dept. jobs in North and Southeast Asia. His Taiwanese wife was here too. He talked for a while then took questions. Was funny, informal, and informative. He's an Obama appointee who just started a few months ago. Here's an official gov page for him. He looks different from his picture, better, has lost weight, and had a floral batik shirt on, no tie. We didn't see one tie in the room of about 100 people. Hey - found a photo online with him in that same shirt.

Caught

Don't be caught by fanciness of the world or technique of the world. We have various, you know, nature, so psychologist or religious leaders studying our nature and organizing big [laughs] organization and you will be captivated by it if you are not wise enough to know yourselves.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. Direct

To imitate or to follow others may be foolish. But to feel resistance is also foolish. So don't be caught by words. And rely on your intuitive direct experience. That is the important thing.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. Rain here and there

When it rains an excesive amount in one place, I suppose it rains less in others. I read about droughts and water shortages but here in Bali and on the west coast of the US where we come from, there's been a ton of rain. The most in ten years here I heard today. A year ago I was reading about the water table drying up. We've had flooding in front of our porch off and on for months - nothing serious, it's fun to walk around it as well we can or through it - and to watch it rise and almost get onto the porch more than some small puddles. But there have been landslides, one which killed seven people. Just read about slides in the Seattle area today. I never get tired of rain though. I get a cozy feeling from it. I love sitting on the porch and working in a thunderstorm. I like it before and after. Walking in the clean air. I imagine in a former life I lived in a desert and died of thirst. - dc

Referring to prior day's excerpt

In your sitting, if you have this kind of confidence you will understand many things which are quite different from the understanding you will have by some other way of study. You can do many things, but without realizing this point, it means nothing. That is why we practice zazen. What I mean is to change your direction of study. I do not say, “Don't do this,” or “Don't do that.” But we have to study Buddhism a different way from your ordinary way of studying, or else Buddhism will be just an interesting philosophy.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. Sung by Chisan Priscilla Storandt to Clayton Chadwick at Elin's and David's home next door to Sogenji in Okayama Japan 1990 or so.

Hero

If you want to be a hero [laughs], hero of the commonest people, don't try to control people or to give some big influence to others. Here in this country some other kinds of hero is necessary. We have too many heroes. I don't think you want heroes like Napoleon or like some statesman. You should be a pioneer, you know, in the other direction. You should be a pioneer in its true sense.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. Continuing from Yesterday's Post

For an American maybe it is not bad but for a Buddhist it is not so good. That is why I say you should know what you are doing. Your idea of Buddhism is something in the cloud, you know [laughs] - where you cannot reach. And still you are ambitious people with big stick [laughs, laughter], and you reach for that. But that is not our way.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. You know, you are very ambitious, and you are trying to do something good always, and try to be successful [laughs] always, you know, without knowing the true meaning of it. So even though you come here and study Buddhism, you know, to me, you know, you are going the other direction [laughs]. It looks like so. I hope this is my misunderstanding, but I am very sorry, more and more [laughs] I found you going the other direction.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. He's paraphrasing and riffing on Dogen here and in recent posts

Don't go wandering about or go sightseeing. If it is necessary, once a month will be allowed. Ancient people lived in the mountain or remote wood and practiced our way, giving up all worldly affairs and learning and virtues and they are sincerely strived to extinguish the fire in their head. Recollecting those things, we should not be involved in worldly affairs. If we are we should be very ashamed of it. In this evanescence of life, we don't know when our life drops like dew on the roadside.  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com. Dogen Zenji established Kosho temple near Kyoto when he was thirty-four. He said only people who already gave up fame and profit can enter this monastery. Hard

So when you practice zazen with people -- I mean by practice not only zazen practice but also cleaning or work -- we call it samu - in samu, or in your zazen practice, or observation of rituals you should try to work on something difficult and something hard, or something which people do not like to do.     ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Excerpt from Shunryu Suzuki lecture 67-04-22-A found onshunryusuzuki.com.
