their energy in order to obtain enlightenment; these are those who try to reach
supreme enlightenment by means of charitableness."
Most people who met with Buddha wanted to be his disciple, if possible. Those who could not be his disciples would contribute something. They wanted to participate in Buddha's work and to feel better. That is what it really means. "These are those who try to reach supreme enlightenment by means of charitableness." This is more natural, you know. It is something like a special practice for attaining enlightenment.
